AAF couriers use a Nippon Denso "Data Wand" on pickup and delivery
operations. The Data Wand is a hand-held computer with bar-code scanner,
keyboard and display screen. An optical interface allows data in the Wand to
be transferred to other AAF computer systems.
Dimension Technologies Pty Limited has developed computer-based training software to train Couriers in the
accurate use of this sophisticated system. During training the Data Wand is
connected to a 'host' training PC by serial cable. The host PC provides
detailed instructions to the trainee who carries out the exercises on the
actual Data Wand; scanning, using the keyboard and function keys. This is real
'hands on' training under constant supervision of the host computer. Users
gain experience in delivery and pickup from account and non-account customers.
A full competency test is included. AAF expect 100% accuracy from couriers in
this test.
Dimension Technologies Pty Limited carried out extensive modifications to the Wand's Operational Software
in the Wand. When the Wand is 'booted' it first checks to see if a training
PC is connected. If so then the Wand enters training mode. If not then the
Wand performs regular operational functions. This testing is invisible to the
user. This means that the Operational Wand may also be used for training.
